“What Are Your Rates?”

“What are your rates?”

I don’t know that I’ve ever gotten a good case when this was the immediate first question a potential client asked.

Of course, people should ask how much it costs to hire us to handle their personal injury case.

But the first question? That tells me all the client cares about is cost, or at least that it’s the most important factor.

And clients who care mostly about cost are less likely to appreciate value. My anecdotal evidence is that they are also the most likely to be difficult to work with.

I’m not going to turn down a client automatically because that’s the first question they ask. But I am going to proceed with caution.
