How Toxic Employees Hold Back Your Law Firm

Bored legal employee ignoring coworker

Let your toxic employees go. It doesn’t matter how much of a high performer they think they are (or actually are, for that matter). Get rid of them. You and your law firm will always be better off once they leave.

Here’s one thing almost all toxic employees have in common: their entire focus is on them, what benefits them, and their individual achievements. This is problematic for even the smallest of law firms but, as you grow, it becomes even more of a problem.

Why? Because everything is about them and what benefits them. They will stunt your growth.

As you grow, you need people who fit your culture, work well with others, are flexible, and are willing to adopt and follow policies and procedures. Just like a sports team, you need good teammates who work well with the team. You don’t need some individual performer off doing their own thing.

How many times have we seen a sports team actually get better when they get rid of somebody who was a cancer in the locker room? The same applies to your law firm.

Regardless of how much you think your law firm will suffer if you lose the production of an employee who may produce good numbers, trust me: It won’t. You’ll actually be better for it, both financially and culture-wise.
